The Significance of Jesus’ Blood

January 15, 2020 By Jan Blonk Leave a Comment

The following devotional is from my book, “His All-Sufficient Blood: Living in the Daily Reality of What Jesus Conclusively Accomplished and Obtained.”

But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Genesis 9:4

As our Creator, God has made us in such a way as pleased Him. One of the major components of our physical existence is our blood, circulating through our body. Right at the beginning, in Genesis, God described its significance, as mentioned in today’s verse. A few books later, we read: “For the life of every creature is its blood: its blood is its life” (Lev. 17:14).

Today’s verse indicates that our blood is much more than red fluid; it’s our very life. That highlights the essence of these devotionals. When Jesus died and shed His blood, He poured out His righteous life for us, which included everything He has accomplished and obtained as the Son of Man, our last Adam.

Thus, when we consider His All-Sufficient Blood, we consider His life from the moment of His birth till He cried, “It is finished” (John 19:30). As contained in His blood, the totality of His life was freely given and poured out for us. That includes His immaculate righteousness and everything He’s entitled to.

When John the Baptist was reluctant to baptize Jesus, He said: “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matt. 3:15). He also said: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matt. 5:17). Jesus is the only one who could say: “I always do the things that are pleasing to him” (John 8:29).

He fulfilled all God’s righteous requirements. All His thoughts, emotions, motives, words, and deeds had a divine stamp: impeccably right. Paul wrote that the consummation of His life was in His death. We read: “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:8).

When He cried, “It is finished,” He had fulfilled all righteous living and poured out His life as a free gift, “to be received by faith” (Rom. 3:25). Indeed, “Who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen” (Gal. 1:4-5).

As we start our journey into the all-sufficiency of His blood, let’s realize that His blood contains His spotless, flawless, unblemished, righteous life, freely given to us as our eternal possession. That includes the Father’s infinite love, favor, and every blessing and promise.
