I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
Everything God did in creation, He did for His own sake. Paul expressed that as follows: “All things were created through him and for him” (Col. 1:16). Everything exists through and for Jesus Christ. Ultimately, nothing exists for our sake.
The same is true in salvation. Everything God did (and does) in salvation is for His own sake. It’s all through and for Jesus Christ. For example, we read: “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers” (Rom. 8:28).
These two grand truths—creation and salvation—help us to realize that everything is centered on God Himself. Jesus is always “the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Rev. 22:13). Creation, history, and salvation are utterly God-centered.
The blotting out of our transgressions is solely for His sake. We don’t deserve it nor can we earn it. At the cross, God wiped out all our transgressions. There is not one transgression that can stand against His people. Since He did that for His own sake, we never have to question its legitimacy.
He desired to do so and who can withstand Him? As such, He will not remember our sins. He placed all of them on His Son and He fully paid for them—He paid our infinite debt. What God has wiped out doesn’t exist anymore. Is there a more freeing reality?
